PINUS PALUSTRIS - LONG LEAF PINE - The Pinus palustris or Longleaf Pine is an evergreen tree that may grow 80 to 120 feet tall with a trunk 2 to 2 1/2 ft. thick. This tree has long, slender, feathery needles in clusters of 3. The needle clusters tend to be tufted at the end of the branches.

The Longleaf pine does best in full sun. It grows well in well-drained sandy or clay soils

It has historically been used for naval purposes, specifically for pitch, tar, resin, and turpentine, and is still used for lumber today. The wood is known for its heaviness, strength, and durability

The needles, borne in bundles of three, average 12" or so long, much longer than those of Loblolly Pine (P. taeda) or any other species in the eastern US
Extra large cones up to 8" . Hardy zone 8-10. Does not like wet soils. We grow and ship in 4 1/2" Pots (quart)
